The London Kitchen team are constantly on the look out for new foodie experiences, from epic street food to gourmet Michelin-standard indulgence. We’re spoilt for choice in London, but sometimes we like to look further afield for our foodie inspiration. And if there’s one city that can hope to rival London town it’s got to be the Big Apple. So we thought we’d escape the big smoke for a weekend of breakfasts, brunches, lunches, dinners and plenty of snacks in between.
As is to be expected from a city as diverse as New York, there is no single cuisine but rather a melting pot of different cuisines, coming together to create a knockout foodie destination. Each area of the city offers a different cuisine according to the ethnicity of its inhabitants. And we made it our mission to experience them all.
Here are our team’s highlights and favourite foodie finds from New York City!
Damian – Managing Director
An amazing lobster roll, I’ve been dreaming of it ever since my last trip to New York, so I had to try it again this time. The dish has inspired a new addition to our manapé menu, we can’t wait for our guests to try these beauties! There was also a stunning coincidence at one point during the trip where the whole team went off in different directions yet magically all ended up in Dean and Deluca. Must’ve been a foodie sixth sense…
Service is something New York’s restaurants do really well. For instance when we perusing the brunch menu at one we were served warm doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce, just in case we got too hungry during the decision making process!
Favourite Foodie Find:
This prize must go to a pulled pork dish which we all tried, and all loved! There were also some amazing wedges of French toast with banana and maple syrup which I wish I could have everyday – and the time we had pecan cheesecake for breakfast! Nowhere does indulgence quite like New York City.
Jeremy – Operations Manager
Standing on the top of the Rockefeller Building on Saturday morning looking over the whole of the city in all its glory. It was a beautiful crisp clear day so the visibility was perfect, it was great to see so many famous landmarks all at once.
Favourite Foodie Find:
My favourite restaurant was a little place called La Palapa in East Village. We had a great authentic Mexican dinner there on Friday night. I had a selection of soft tacos filled with pulled pork, spicy beef and chicken, served with the best rice and re-fried beans as well as a delicious salsa and fresh green chilli sauce.
My personal food highlight came on Sunday morning when I found a great deli round the corner from the hotel and had a grilled Ruben sandwich for brunch. Salt beef piled high with melted swiss cheese and sauerkraut between 2 pieces of thick toasted rye bread. Can’t beat that!
Rachel – Event Planner
Experiencing Brunch ‘New York’ style- they really go to town- what a treat! I had the perfect egg white omelette with goat’s cheese, spinach and smoked salmon… oh and a cheeky champagne cocktail! Another highlight was seeing the colours of the trees in Central Park – totally breathtaking.
Dean and Deluca, an amazing deli, bakery and food store. The team had visited it before and told me stories of its brilliance, but it had to be seen to be believed. If only I had the pennies to shop in places like that all the time!
Jay – Senior Event Planner
Rewarding the team on such a successful year! There is no better way to celebrate than amongst the culinary delights and bright lights of NYC, and for hard-working The London Kitchen team it was a well deserved treat.
The stand out meal of the trip was brunch of goat’s cheese and pancetta omelette with steamed greens at the Standard hotel. I followed it with a brisk (and much needed!) walk on the highline. I’ve visited New York several times but the food never fails to amaze me, this trip was no exception!
