The Ultimate Mulled Wine Recipe

Love it or hate it, you can’t celebrate Christmas without a rich, spicy glass of mulled wine.  Recipes for this delicious festive nectar have been known to cause their fair share of controversy, but whether you think it’s all about the cloves or your secret involves the addition just the right amount of sugar we know you’ll love this one – The London Kitchen’s Ultimate Mulled Wine Recipe. It’s that good.

This one makes about 12 glasses, so perfectly for those big family gatherings.

1 orange

1 lemon, peel only

150g caster sugar

5 cloves

5 cardamom pods

1 cinnamon stick

A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg

2 bottles of red wine (go for a good one – you don’t want a headache!)

The Method:

  1. Peel and juice your orange, then add it to the saucepan along with your lemon peel, sugar and spices. Add wine until it covers the sugar and heat gently until it’s all dissolved. Bring to the boil and cook for 5 – 8 minutes until you have a thick, Christmassy liquid. If you’d like to make your wine ahead you can store this condensed mulled wine for a later date.
  2. Turn down the heat and pour your wine into a saucepan, gently heating it through until the room is filled with the unmistakable scent of Christmas and you can’t wait to try a glass.
  3. Try a glass.
