When we’re not busy creating innovative menus for special events, the London Kitchen team love to get acquainted with the incredibly diverse London dining scene. One of our favourite foodie phenomenons has got to be the pop-up restaurant – we can’t get enough of the unusual menus, weird and wacky themes and innovative settings these temporary restaurants offer. And don’t even get us started on the names – some of them can only be described as utter brilliance. Here are 10 of our favourites for May:
Get Lucky Pop-Up Vending Machine, Shoreditch
Until 9th May
Make like Pharell and get lucky in Shoreditch with this healthy pop-up juice stall. Located in Hanbury Street, near one of our favourite venues the Truman Brewery, Lucky Juice is a fresh concept by Laurie Howell and Toby Treyer-Evans of ad agency Wieden+Kennedy. Just put 3 x £1 in the slot in exchange for a spin, and see what you get. Every spin’s a winner!
Casa Sabor’s Salvador da Bahia, Old Street
From 8th-10th May
Latin American foodie experts Casa Sabor return to Old Street mid-May, to take up residence at the Ozone Coffee Roasters building in Leonard Street. The focus is very much on Brazil’s Salvador Da Bahia, with modern takes on all the classics.
The Rooftop Film Club, Shoreditch & Peckham
At last the season of open air cinema is back! The Rooftop Film Club have partnered with British Airways to present all the classics, on the rooftops that made them famous – The Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch, and The Bussey Building in Peckham.
Wrecker’s Wednesdays, The Sun & 13 Cantons, Soho
From Wednesday 7th May
A new, regular Cornish night at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho. This one will feature Cornish pasties, Cornish beer, live music and more – take a look, it’ll take place on the first Wednesday of every month, from 7th May.
Bacchus Sundays, Hoxton Street Studios, Hoxton
Tuck into a totally traditional Roast in a more unusual setting at Bacchus Sundays. Proper British roast dinners will be served as part of a weekly residency at Hoxton Street Studios, with the finest of seasonal ingredients.
Andy Bates’s First Aid Rescue, The Liquor Store, Dalston
Sunday 4th May – serving from 11am – 5pm
Andy Bates will be cooking up a storm at Dalston’s The Liquor Store this month, tickets are only £20 and include a huge menu with some very tempting dishes – warm cinnamon roll wrapped in smoked bacon, drizzled with a bacon fat infused bourbon sugar syrup, anyone?
Greek Sharing Supper, Possessed N1, Chapel Market
Thursday 1st & Friday 2nd May
Tania of Possessed N1 will be transforming her shop into a traditional Greek taverna to mark the start of May. There’ll be live music, traditional Greek tunes and no less than 14 mezze courses!
Death by Burrito, Battersea
7 Days a Week
Any event called Death by Burrito gets our attention, and we’re pleased to report that this one’s open 7 days a week for the next three months! There’ll be burritos, tacos and special menus featuring ribs and flat iron chicken on Sundays.
Christabel’s May Mad Hatters Brunch, Shoreditch
Sunday 4th May
Prepare for an extraordinary Sunday Brunch with Christabel Beeson this May. Set within an old Victorian loft, the brunch includes a tempting menu – pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup, scones with cheddar cheese and spicy honey will be whipped up from the rabbit hole.
Brugal Rum’s Emporio Eivissa Rooftop Bar & Market, Shoreditch
Thursday 8th – Sunday 11th May
It’s about time Ibiza came to London, isn’t it? This premium rum brand aims to bring the sunny isles to London town, with a rooftop bar filled with street food and relaxed beats. Entrance is free, but you need to register for a ticket.
