Venue of the Week: Borough Market

Borough Market is celebrating 1000 years this year, it’s one of London’s most impressive venues. It’s not just the sheer quality of the food on offer that makes Borough Market special – it’s also about the place. Whether you are looking to host an exclusive private dinner, celebrate a special occasion or arrange a team building play, Borough Market is an ideal location. With architecture ranging from the Victorian, to Art Deco, to the modern day; Borough Market is an iconic venue space in the heart of London.

Two of the market’s event spaces, Market Hall and 1 Cathedral Street have just received licenses for civil ceremonies too, so you could host your dream wedding here! Here are a few of the event spaces on offer within this historic marketplace:

Market Hall – Capacity 250 standing – This striking glass structure benefits from views of the historic Green Market and Borough High Street. As an event space, it offers organisers and guests a unique and modern setting in which to entertain. The Market Hall is very much part of the bustling Market, but can be closed off to create a private space. Its modern structure has been designed to maximise horticultural potential, with vertical planters and moveable seating. All this helps to make this an ideal pre-styled space. This space also has a demonstration kitchen, bar structure and toilets on site. The Market Hall is the perfect, contemporary backdrop to host drink receptions, product launches, fashion shows, award ceremonies and mini festivals, to name but a few.

1 Cathedral Street – Capacity  50 dinner, 150 standing – This grand Victorian building is a hidden gem, nestling next to Borough Market and overlooking Southwark Cathedral. The former historic home of the old Borough Market Trustees (circa 1897) is spread over two floors with an impressive sweeping staircase at its heart. Each floor has two, high ceilinged rooms which can be transformed into a bespoke event space for you and your guests. No 1. Cathedral Street is bright and spacious, with traditional Victorian fireplaces and original features in each room. It is a dry hire venue with ample space for external caterers and suppliers.

Three Crown Square – Capacity 200 standing –  is located at the heart of the historic Market. On trading days, there is the bustling backdrop of market stalls and the buzz of the working Market. On non-trading days, the area offers a flexible and unique events space. Although an outdoor space, it is sheltered and protected by its fully restored, iconic Victorian glass and ironwork roof. Easily located from the Art Deco gates of Borough Market on Southwark Street, it has access to an enclosed seating area, toilets and power supply. This is a distinctive venue, perfect for hosting a range of different events including street parties, weddings, promotional events and launch parties.

Jubilee Place – Capacity 150 standing – Situated on the north edge of the Market, Jubilee Place is a versatile outdoor location. With its permanent roof it is ideally placed to host large- scale events such as food festivals, product launches and exhibitions. This wide, open space has onsite toilets and easy access to storage areas and the rest of the Market. There is also the option to access the area discreetly via Winchester Walk.
