The Artliner Wind Tunnel Project, Farnborough

Farnborough’s historic wind tunnels are to launch as private event spaces in 2014, as part of Artliner’s Wind Tunnel Project. The Grade I listed flight-testing warehouses, located beside TAG Farnborough Airport, will be transformed into a unique, contemporary venue for private and corporate events, exclusively catered by The London Kitchen.

The tunnels, named Q121 and R52, are suited to private and corporate events for up to 350 guests.Opened in April 1935 Q121 is the largest wind tunnel in Great Britain and the largest return type tunnel in Europe. The building is the most complete and imposing example in the world after the Full Scale Tunnel at Langley in the US. The venue is to be fitted with vintage military furniture, with a 30ft mahogany wood blade used at the very beginning of British aviation creating an unusual focal point in the space.

R52 dates back to 1917 and is an extremely rare display of British heritage. A smaller space than Q121, the venue is of great historical importance, with much of the twentieth century’s aeronautical research being carried out here. Guests will be invited to explore the pilot’s control cabin, where testing dials still remain intact. The venue can accommodate up to 350 guests.
